"We do not inherit the earth from our ancestors.  We borrow it from our children."

-Wendell Berry

Sustainable parenting is our mission.  Every day, within our organization, we look for ways we can not only impact the earth with our products, but with our actions as a company as well.  Here is what we do to make sure our passion for sustainable parenthood is carried on through every part of our business.

  • Our diapers are made in small batches and delivered approximately every 8-12 weeks to keep inventory fresh and avoid unnecessary waste in production.
    • We say NO to plastic waste.  We do not use individual plastic bags in during shipment from our factory to our US warehouse.
      • Our cloth diapers are bundled in scrap pieces of fabric that we reuse in our warehouse operations.
      • We use certified 100% compostable bags to wrap our individual items that go out to our customers from our distribution center.
      • We avoid using plastic items and packaging in our warehouse operations whenever possible.
  • Every consumer product is purposefully minimally packaged.  We want to see overall waste reduction in our consumer products, so each diaper, wet bag, swaddle includes a simple 100% recycled, reforested paper card.

Why is it important to have Oeko-Tex Certified Bamboo for Cloth Diapers?

One of the most interesting facts about bamboo is that it can be harvested by cutting the tree, then processing it either mechanically (which is very time consuming) or chemically to turn into usable fabric. It's common practice for producers who want their product quickly and easily to process the bamboo in chemicals like sodium hydroxide (also known as lye or caustic soda) and carbon disulfide to allow the thick fibers to be woven into fabric.

Unfortunately, using carbon disulfide is extremely toxic. Chronic exposure to this compound has been associated with nervous system damage, reproductive health issues for factory workers.[1]

In order to ensure that our cloth diapers are safe for your baby and for our workers, we only use fabrics certified by Oeko-Tex.  By using Oeko-Tex Certified Bamboo we insure that the fabrics used in our cloth diapers have been manufactured under sustainable and socially responsible conditions.  Our Standard 100 Certification also ensures that all of our fabrics have been tested for harmful substances, from yarn to finished product, making it the perfect solution for babies with sensitive skin.

Why Did We Chose To Use Bamboo Knit

Lighthouse Kids Company Diapers were in development for 2 years before they were finally released into the market.  We tested various types of materials including cotton, bamboo terry, and bamboo knit.  We found that bamboo knit was a more supple fabric, soft to the touch, and held up to constant washing beautifully.

Bamboo knit is so strong because the fabric is made by interlocking individual fibers providing an exceptional smooth feel while keeping the fibers strong and supple through various washes.

Bamboo and Cloth Diapers

Cloth diaper inserts can be made out of lots of different fabrics, including cotton, hemp, microfiber, and bamboo.

Microfiber is a synthetic fiber that absorbs very well, however, microfiber was not an option for LKC diapers because we wanted to use natural fibers in case baby has a sensitivity to polyester based fabrics.  Microfiber is notorious for holding on to stink, as each individual fiber is shaped like a curl.  Once dirt gets on the fabric it is incredibly hard to restore it to its original state.

Cotton and hemp are amazing fabrics, however, cotton is not as absorbent as bamboo so in order to cloth diaper you would need lots of layers, causing the diaper to be bulky.  Hemp is great for cloth diapers however, Hemp is not as sustainable as bamboo and it tends to hold on to stink, which is an obvious detriment when cloth diapering.

The Proof

When shopping for cloth diapers, it's super important to make sure that you are checking whether the materials used in cloth diapers are actually safe for baby.  With Lighthouse Kids Company, we make sure that our diapers are not only certified by the CPSC by a stringent testing process, but we also use materials to make our diapers certified by agencies like OEKO-TEX.  This assures that every single batch is perfection because there are no holds barred when it comes to the safety of our babies.
